Originally chambered in 7.92×57mm Mauser (Mauser caliber), then available in 7.62×54mmR and 8×57mm IS, this sniper rifle was designed to equip the armed forces of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Derived from the AK family of weapons, the Zastava M76 is distinguished by its rugged design, integrated optics and ability to engage targets at long distances in harsh environments.

History and Development of the Zastava M76

In the early 1970s, the Yugoslav Army (JNA — Jugoslovenska Narodna Armija) was looking to replace its old sniper rifles inherited from World War II. The request was for a semi-automatic rifle capable of increased accuracy at distances of more than 800 meters, while maintaining manufacturing and maintenance compatible with the national industrial infrastructure.

Zastava Arms’ engineering was inspired by the proven mechanism of the AK family (Kalashnikov), adapting it to fire more powerful cartridges and incorporating a longer barrel as well as a scope. Development of the Zastava M76 was finalized around 1975–1976, and serial production began soon after. The weapon was officially adopted by the JNA and then used extensively in the conflicts that followed the breakup of Yugoslavia in the 1990s.

During the Yugoslav Wars (1991–2001), the Zastava M76 gained particular notoriety as a sniper rifle widely used by Serb, Croat and Bosnian units. Its robustness and relative ease of maintenance made it a popular weapon in the difficult field conditions of the region.

Technical Specifications

Feature

Specification

Official designation

Zastava M76

Country of origin

Yugoslavia (now Serbia)

Manufacturer

Zastava Arms (Kragujevac)

Years of production

1976 – present

Main Caliber

7.92×57mm Mauser (8mm Mauser)

Reciprocating Calibers

7.62×54mmR, 8×57mm IS

Semi-automatic action, rotating cylinder head, gas piston (AK derivative)

Total length

1,135 mm

Barrel length

550 mm

Weight (without charger)

4.2 kg

Magazine capacity

10 rounds (detachable)

Effective range

800–1,000 m

Maximum range

1,500 m

ON-M76
Rifle Scope

(4×, Fixed Magnification)

Fixed stock

, wood or synthetic

Design and Mechanism

The Zastava M76 is based on a design derived from the AK platform, but substantially modified to meet the requirements of a sniper rifle. The long-stroke gas piston mechanism ensures reliable operation even in conditions of dirt, dust and extreme temperatures — a feature inherited directly from Kalashnikov rifles.

The barrel, which is longer than that of a standard assault rifle, improves the initial velocity of the bullet and stability in flight, which contributes directly to accuracy at long distances. The fixed stock made of wood (or synthetic material depending on the variant) provides a good grip and stable support when aiming. A bipod can be mounted under the barrel for shooting in a prone position.

The ON-M76 rifle scope, supplied as standard, offers a fixed magnification of 4×. It has graduated reticles allowing the correction of drift and elevation for different distances. The scope is mounted on a side rail (left side of the receiver), leaving the iron sights accessible for backup use.

Variants and Versions

Several variants of the Zastava M76 have been produced over the years to meet specific needs or for export:

The M76 in 7.92×57mm is the original version, designed to use the Mauser 8mm cartridge, abundantly available in Yugoslav stocks inherited from World War II. The M76 in 7.62×54mmR was developed to meet export needs to countries using Soviet ammunition, especially African and Middle Eastern customers. The Zastava M91 is the modernized version, chambering the 7.62×54mmR cartridge, intended for the Serbian armed forces heirs to the JNA after the dissolution of Yugoslavia. A semi-automatic export variant was also marketed on the civilian market under various names depending on the country.

Users and Armed Forces

The Zastava M76 has been used by many armed forces and armed groups since the 1980s. Yugoslavia and its successor states (Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Slovenia, North Macedonia, Montenegro) are the first and main users, the rifle having equipped the JNA and then the various national armies resulting from the federal dissolution.

For export, the weapon was delivered to several countries in the Middle East and Africa as part of arms deals concluded by socialist Yugoslavia. Examples have been captured or recovered in many conflicts and continue to appear in areas of tension around the world. The M76 has been documented in Iraq, Syria, Libya and several African countries during the conflicts of the 2010s.

Performance and Precision

Under ideal conditions, the Zastava M76 is capable of an accuracy in the range of 1 to 1.5 MOA (Minute Of Angle) with good ammunition. The effective range of 800 meters makes it a medium-range sniper, suitable for open and semi-open terrain engagements typical of the Balkans and the Middle East.

Compared to contemporary Western-designed sniper rifles (such as the H&K PSG1 or the Accuracy International), the M76 is less accurate but much more robust and easier to maintain in harsh conditions. Its main advantage remains its reliability inherited from the AK platform, combined with a firepower greater than that of a standard assault rifle.

Civil Possession in Switzerland

In Switzerland, the Zastava M76 is subject to the Federal Weapons Act (Arms Act). As a high-capacity semi-automatic rifle with a detachable magazine firing intermediate or higher cartridges, its acquisition is subject to obtaining a weapons acquisition permit issued by the canton of residence.

Semi-automatic export versions with a 10-round magazine are theoretically acquitable, but remain weapons with a high potential for harm subject to verification. High-capacity magazines (more than 10 rounds for long guns) have been subject to additional restrictions since the amendments to the 2019 Firearms Directive to the Arms Act, to which Switzerland is associated under the Schengen Agreement.

It is strongly recommended to consult the competent cantonal service before any purchase, and to check the exact configuration of the example concerned (magazine capacity, barrel length, specific classification).

Conclusion

The Zastava M76 represents an important page in the history of Yugoslav firearms and an interesting example of the adaptation of the AK platform to long-range precision shooting missions. Robust, reliable and easy to maintain, it remains a functional weapon, examples of which are still in active service with several armed forces. For collectors and enthusiasts of historic weapons, the Zastava M76 is a choice piece that testifies to the military industrial know-how of socialist Yugoslavia and the turbulent history of the Balkans.

["post-4626","wiki","type-wiki","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry
["GET
