Designed for close-quarters and medium-range combat, it was officially adopted by the US Army in 2018 under the designation Direct View Optic (DVO) to equip the M4A1 Carbine rifle and the Special Forces SCAR-H (USSOCOM).

History and Development of Tango6T

The development of the Tango6T was part of a process to modernize the US Army’s infantry optics, at a time when LPVOs were beginning to supplant fixed-magnification sights (Trijicon ACOG) on combat rifles. In the mid-2010s, the U.S. Army launched a program called Squad-Variable Powered Scope (S-VPS) to equip its squad designated marksmen and infantrymen with an optical system that offers both magnification-free vision (1x) for close-quarters battle and 6x magnification for engagements at 600 meters and beyond.

SIG Sauer won the S-VPS contract in January 2018 with an initial value of approximately $44.7 million, beating out competitors such as Vortex Optics, Trijicon and Leupold. This adoption was followed in 2020 by the selection of the Tango6T (in 1-6x variant) by USSOCOM as part of the Squad-Variable Powered Scope SOCOM program. A 1-10x variant of the same system was later adopted for the Next Generation Squad Weapon (NGSW) in 2022, integrated into the SIG XM157 Fire Control System.

Technical Specifications

Feature

Specification

Officially designated

SIG Sauer Tango6T 1-6x24mm

Country of Origin

United States (Germany for parent brand)

Manufacturer

SIG Sauer Electro-Optics (Wilsonville, Oregon)

Year of introduction

2017 (US Army adoption: 2018)

LPVO (Low Power Variable Optic) First Focal Plane
Type

1x to 6x variable

magnification

Objective Diameter

: 24 mm

Tube diameter

30 mm

Field of view

34.4 m to 100 m (at 1x) / 6.0 m at 100 m (at 6x)

95mm eye relief

HORSESHOE-DOT MOA/MIL or DWLR-6

reticle
(military version)

First Focal Plane (FFP)

11-level illumination

, CR2032 battery power

Turrets

Adjustment 0.5 MOA or 0.1 MIL per click

Total length

269 mm

Weight

624 g (without mount)

IPX-7 waterproof (1 meter / 30 minutes)

Impact resistance

1,500 G

Operation and Technical Particularities

The Tango6T is a variable magnification scope built on a one-piece 6061-T6 aluminum tube, designed to withstand the extreme conditions of combat. Its optical system is based on a First Focal Plane (FFP) reticle, which means that the reticle graduations grow with the image: distance estimates and ballistic corrections remain valid at all levels of magnification, an essential asset for long-range shooting.

The main feature of the Tango6T is its illuminated reticle with 11 intensity levels, powered by a CR2032 battery. The HORSESHOE-DOT reticle (center point with a glowing horseshoe) allows for fast target acquisition at 1x, comparable to a red dot, while providing a ballistic reticle accurate at 6x for precision engagements. The DWLR-6 (Dual-View Wide Range) military version incorporates MIL graduations for interoperable communication with NATO systems.

The zoom button has a removable throw lever that makes it easy to quickly switch from 1x to 6x magnification without letting go of the grip. The adjustment turrets are protected by caps and can be reset (zero stop) after the initial adjustment, preventing accidental misadjustments on mission.

Variants and Versions

The Tango6T range is available in several versions for different markets:

The Tango6T 1-6×24 DVO is the version selected by the US Army in 2018, equipped with the MIL DWLR-6 reticle and supplied with an Alpha4 cantilever mount. The Tango6T 1-6×24 SOCOM is a specific version for American special forces, optimized for the SCAR-H and MCX-Spear rifles. The Tango6T 1-10×28 has been developed to meet the needs of the NGSW program and incorporates extended magnification up to 10x. Finally, civilian versions Tango6 and Tango6T are also marketed with different reticles (Hellfire, MOA Milling, etc.) for sport shooters and hunters.

Users and Armed Forces

The Tango6T mainly equips the U.S. Armed Forces following several major contracts. The US Army has been using it since 2018 to equip the Squad Designated Marksmen and more broadly the infantry on the M4A1. The United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) adopted the SOCOM variant in 2020. Several NATO Allied forces are evaluating or have adopted the Tango6T, including through infantry optics modernization programs. On the civilian side, the scope is appreciated by sport shooters in 3-Gun competition and by hunters practicing multi-purpose shooting.

Civil Possession in Switzerland

In Switzerland, the SIG Sauer Tango6T scope is freely sold by specialist gunsmiths and shooter optics retailers. As a firearm accessory (and not a firearm per se), its acquisition is not subject to a firearms acquisition licence. However, its mounting on a semi-automatic rifle of the AR-15 or MCX type implies compliance with the provisions of the Federal Weapons Act (LArm) concerning the support weapon. For hunters, the Tango6T complies with the requirements of the hunting certificate and offers appreciated performance in driven driving (at 1x) as well as in approach shooting (at 6x). There are no specific restrictions on the illuminated reticle for hunting, unlike in some European countries.

Conclusion

The Sauer Tango6T GIS has established itself as one of the world’s leading military LPVOs, validated by its widespread adoption by the US Army and USSOCOM. Its robustness, its First Focal Plane reticle and its very high quality optical system make it a preferred choice for demanding shooters, whether military, sports or hunters. Although priced high, the Tango6T embodies the modern evolution of combat optics and marks an important milestone in the transition of Western forces to multi-purpose LPVOs.

["post-5167","wiki","type-wiki","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry

<meta name="description" content="SIG Sauer Tango6T: LPVO 1-6x24 First Focal Plane adopted by the US Army in 2018.
